Bank Balance & Financial Requirement for D-2/D-4

How the financial requirement works for a Korea student visa: how much to show, acceptable proof of funds, scholarships, and mistakes to avoid.

The Langle Team··1 min read

The financial requirement is one of the top reasons Korea student visas get delayed — usually because the amount or the certificate date is wrong. Here's how to get it right for a D-2 or D-4.

Not sure how much to show? Ask a consultant.

How much you need to show

You must prove you can cover tuition plus living costs, normally with a bank balance certificate. The required amount is set by immigration and adjusted periodically, so don't rely on an old figure — confirm the current requirement with your university or on HiKorea before printing anything.

Acceptable proof of funds

  • Your own bank certificate — the simplest case.
  • A sponsor's (often a parent) — add documents proving the relationship and the sponsor's capacity.
  • A scholarship award letter — can cover part or all of the requirement.

Common mistakes

  1. Using an outdated amount — the figure changes.
  2. A certificate that's too old — many embassies want it recent.
  3. Funds parked only briefly — some cases expect the balance to be maintained.
  4. Sponsor documents missing — prove the relationship and capacity.

Frequently asked questions

How much money do I need for a D-2/D-4 visa?
Enough to cover tuition and living costs, shown via a bank balance certificate. The exact amount is set by immigration and changes periodically — confirm the current figure with your school or on HiKorea.
Whose bank account can I use?
Usually your own, or a sponsor's (often a parent) with supporting documents proving the relationship and the sponsor's ability to fund you.
How recent must the bank certificate be?
Typically issued within a short window before you apply. Check the acceptable date range for your embassy.
Do scholarships replace the bank balance?
A scholarship award letter can cover part or all of the requirement, depending on its value and terms. Bring the official letter.
